viperfish

Luminous deep predator

A viperfish is a deep-sea fish with needle-like fangs so long they curve outside its closed mouth.

Found in tropical and temperate oceans at depths where no light penetrates, viperfish have rows of photophores—light-producing organs—along their bodies that they use to lure prey.

The name comes from the resemblance to a viper's fangs.
