Cleopatra's Needle
Thames riverside obelisk
Cleopatra's Needle is the name given to several ancient Egyptian obelisks now standing in London, Paris, and New York's Central Park.
Despite the name, these granite monuments predate Cleopatra by over a thousand years—the association is romantic rather than historical.
The term sometimes refers generically to any Egyptian obelisk relocated to a Western city.
