Canaries

Atlantic African islands

Canaries are small songbirds, typically yellow, originally from the Canary Islands and long bred as cage birds.

Their sensitivity to toxic gases made them early warning systems in coal mines—miners brought canaries underground, and a dead bird signaled danger.

This extends metaphorically: a canary in the coal mine is an early indicator of trouble.

Canaries is also the plural of canary yellow, a bright shade.
