yellow pine

Southern building wood

Yellow pine refers to several North American pine species with yellowish wood, particularly longleaf, shortleaf, and ponderosa pines.

The wood is harder and denser than white pine, valued for construction, flooring, and millwork: The old factory had yellow pine beams throughout.

The term is more commercial than botanical—lumber dealers use it to distinguish these harder pines from softer species.
