thesis-antithesis-synthesis
Dialectical reasoning pattern
Thesis-antithesis-synthesis is a pattern of reasoning associated with the philosopher Hegel, though he rarely used these exact terms.
A thesis is an initial proposition, an antithesis is its contradiction or opposition, and synthesis resolves the tension by combining elements of both into something new.
The synthesis then becomes a new thesis, and the process repeats.
The formula describes how ideas develop through conflict: Every political movement generates its antithesis.
Often invoked loosely to suggest that opposing views can be reconciled into higher understanding.
