federal withholding
Government tax extraction
Federal withholding is money that employers deduct from employees' paychecks and send directly to the federal government as prepayment toward income taxes owed.
The amount withheld depends on earnings, filing status, and allowances claimed on a W-4 form.
At tax time, if too much was withheld, you get a refund; too little, and you owe: I adjusted my federal withholding so I'd stop getting such a big refund.
