Doing nothing is the state of having no activity, occupation, or purpose at a given moment.
The phrase often carries judgment—idleness when productivity is expected: I caught him doing nothing when he should have been working.
But it can also describe deliberate rest or resistance to constant busyness: Sometimes doing nothing is exactly what you need.
