witch hunter

Pursuer of hags

A witch hunter is someone who searches for and prosecutes alleged witches—historically, officials who identified, interrogated, and condemned people (usually women) accused of practicing witchcraft.

The term now typically appears figuratively for someone conducting aggressive investigations based on flimsy evidence or paranoid suspicion: The senator styled himself a witch hunter rooting out communist sympathizers.

The implication is zealotry and disregard for due process.
