winter quarters
Cold-weather military encampment
Winter quarters are the place where an army, expedition, or itinerant group stays during winter months when travel or campaigning becomes impractical.
Historically, military forces would suspend operations and establish winter quarters until spring: Napoleon's army sought winter quarters in Moscow.
The term also applies to where circus performers and animals spend the off-season.
