speed brakes
Deceleration control surfaces
Speed brakes are panels on an aircraft that deploy to increase drag and slow the plane down, typically during descent or after landing.
Unlike wheel brakes, they work against the air itself: The pilot deployed the speed brakes to lose altitude quickly.
On cars, the term sometimes describes aerodynamic devices that increase downforce at high speeds.
