way-station

Brief journey pause

A way-station is a stopping point along a route, originally a minor station between major stops on a railroad or stagecoach line.

The word now usually appears figuratively for any intermediate stage in a longer journey or process: The job was just a way-station on his path to something better.

Also spelled waystation.
