gale warnings
High wind advisories
Gale warnings are official meteorological alerts issued when sustained winds of 34 to 47 knots (39 to 54 mph) are expected over water.
Maritime authorities issue them to warn ships and coastal areas of dangerous conditions: Small craft should return to harbor when gale warnings are posted.
On land, similar wind speeds typically fall under high wind warnings instead.
