water diviner
Finds underground springs
A water diviner is a person who claims to locate underground water sources using a forked stick, pendulum, or other tool—a practice also called dowsing or divining.
The diviner walks over land holding the instrument, which supposedly moves when passing over water.
Scientific evidence for the practice is lacking, but it persists in rural areas: The farmer hired a water diviner before drilling the well.
