warp bubble
Faster-than-light envelope
A warp bubble is a theoretical region of spacetime distortion that could enable faster-than-light travel by contracting space ahead of a spacecraft and expanding it behind.
The concept comes from physicist Miguel Alcubierre's 1994 proposal: rather than moving through space, the ship would ride inside a bubble of flat spacetime while the bubble itself moves.
The idea remains speculative, requiring exotic matter with negative energy density that may not exist.
In science fiction, warp bubbles power interstellar travel: The ship's warp bubble collapsed, stranding them light-years from home.
