volcanic dome
Steep lava bulge
A volcanic dome is a rounded mound of lava that forms when highly viscous magma is extruded from a volcanic vent but is too thick to flow far, instead piling up around the opening.
Unlike the explosive eruptions that create cinder cones or the fluid flows that build shield volcanoes, dome-building eruptions are typically slow and can continue for months or years.
Volcanic domes are unstable and may collapse, triggering pyroclastic flows of superheated gas and rock debris.
