ventilators

Mechanical breathing aids

Ventilators are machines that mechanically move air into and out of the lungs for patients who cannot breathe adequately on their own.

In hospitals, critically ill patients may be placed on ventilators during surgery, respiratory failure, or severe illness: COVID patients overwhelmed the supply of ventilators.

The term also applies to devices that circulate fresh air through buildings or enclosed spaces.
