hermetic seals
Completely airtight barriers
Hermetic seals are airtight closures that prevent any gas or liquid from passing through.
The term comes from Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary founder of alchemy, whose followers supposedly sealed vessels by fusing the glass with fire.
Modern hermetic seals appear in food preservation, electronics, and laboratory equipment: The vaccine requires hermetic seals to maintain sterility.
Figuratively, something hermetically sealed is completely isolated or impenetrable.
