underhang

Ledge jutting underneath

An underhang is a surface or formation that juts out with empty space beneath it—the inverse of an overhang.

In climbing, an underhang presents rock that slopes away from the climber, requiring them to pull upward against gravity.

The term appears in geology and architecture for similar projecting structures viewed from below.
