umbrae

Eclipse's darkest zones

Umbrae is the plural of umbra, the darkest part of a shadow where light is completely blocked.

In astronomy, the umbra is the cone-shaped region of total shadow cast by a celestial body during an eclipse: The moon passed through Earth's umbra.

The term also applies to the dark central region of a sunspot.
