twilight zones
Between light, dark
Twilight zones are ambiguous or liminal areas between clearly defined states—neither fully one thing nor another.
The term comes from the dim light between daylight and darkness, extending to any boundary region: the twilight zone between sleep and waking, a legal twilight zone where regulations don't clearly apply.
The phrase gained cultural weight from the television series *The Twilight Zone*, which explored uncanny situations defying normal reality, lending the term connotations of the strange or surreal: The whole experience felt like something out of the twilight zone.
