uke

Four-stringed strummer

Uke is informal for ukulele, the small four-stringed instrument: She brought her uke to the beach.

In martial arts like judo and aikido, uke is the person receiving a technique—the one being thrown or pinned—as opposed to tori, who executes the move.

The term comes from Japanese, meaning "receiver."
