turnspit
Meat-turning mechanism
A turnspit was a dog or mechanical device that turned a roasting spit over a fire.
Before the age of electric rotisseries, meat had to be rotated constantly for even cooking.
Small dogs bred for the purpose would run in a wheel connected to the spit: The turnspit dog was a fixture of English kitchens.
The word now appears mainly in historical contexts.
