tumbrel
Farmer's dumping cart
A tumbrel is a two-wheeled cart, particularly one used during the French Revolution to carry condemned prisoners to the guillotine.
The image of aristocrats riding in tumbrels through jeering crowds became iconic of revolutionary terror.
Earlier, tumbrels were farm carts for hauling manure or military carts for transporting ammunition.
Also spelled tumbril.
