potting soil

Container gardening substrate

Potting soil is a growing medium for container plants, typically a mixture of peat moss, perlite, vermiculite, and other organic materials.

Unlike garden soil, it's formulated to drain well while retaining moisture: I repotted the fern with fresh potting soil.

Also called potting mix.
