trading pit
Commodities shouting arena
A trading pit is a sunken, often octagonal area on an exchange floor where traders gather to buy and sell commodities or securities through open outcry—shouting bids and offers while using hand signals.
The design allows traders to see and hear each other in the chaos.
Once central to financial markets, trading pits have largely been replaced by electronic trading: The old trading pit fell silent when the exchange went digital.
