tide gate
Coastal flow regulator
A tide gate is a valve or gate installed in a drainage system, dike, or levee that allows water to flow in only one direction—typically letting freshwater drain out during low tide while preventing seawater from flowing back in during high tide.
These structures protect low-lying coastal and estuarine areas from flooding and saltwater intrusion.
Some modern tide gates are designed to allow limited tidal exchange to support fish passage and wetland ecosystems.
