ticker symbols
Market identifier letters
Ticker symbols are short letter codes identifying securities traded on stock exchanges.
Originally displayed on ticker tape machines, they now appear on electronic trading platforms and financial news: AAPL for Apple, GOOGL for Alphabet.
American exchanges typically use one to four letters, while other markets may include numbers or longer codes.
The term extends to any standardized abbreviation identifying a tradable asset.
