subacute

Between mild, severe

Subacute describes a condition between acute and chronic—not sudden or severe, but not yet long-lasting.

In medicine, subacute symptoms develop more gradually than acute ones and persist longer, but haven't reached the chronic stage: a subacute infection, subacute thyroiditis.

The term helps clinicians distinguish intermediate phases of disease progression.
