three-deckers

Stacked club sandwiches

Three-deckers are things with three levels or layers.

The term originally described warships with three gun decks, then extended to triple-decker sandwiches and three-story apartment buildings—especially the flat-roofed wooden houses common in New England cities: The neighborhood was full of old three-deckers.

In literary criticism, three-deckers were Victorian novels published in three volumes.
