third-degree burn

Skin fully destroyed

A third-degree burn is the most severe classification of burn injury, destroying all layers of skin and potentially damaging underlying tissue, muscle, or bone.

The burned area may appear white, brown, or black and feels leathery.

Unlike less severe burns, third-degree burns destroy nerve endings, so the wound itself may not hurt: Third-degree burns require immediate medical attention and often skin grafts.
