second-degree burn

Blistering skin injury

A second-degree burn damages both the outer skin layer and part of the layer beneath, causing blistering, severe pain, and redness.

More serious than a first-degree burn (which affects only the surface) but less severe than a third-degree burn (which destroys all skin layers).

The hot oil splattered and left second-degree burns on her forearm.
