test tube babies
Petri dish offspring
Test tube babies are children conceived through in vitro fertilization, where eggs are fertilized outside the body in laboratory conditions before being implanted in the uterus.
The term dates from the late 1970s when the procedure was novel and sensational.
It remains common in casual speech but sounds dated or slightly crude compared to the clinical "IVF baby": My cousin was one of the first test tube babies in our state.
