taking leave

Exiting a situation

Taking leave means departing or saying goodbye, often with some formality: After taking leave of her hosts, she walked to the station.

The phrase can also mean beginning a period of authorized absence from work: He's taking leave to care for his father.

To take leave of one's senses is to act irrationally or go temporarily mad.
