surgical masks

Medical mouth barriers

Surgical masks are loose-fitting disposable coverings worn over the nose and mouth, originally designed to protect patients from a surgeon's respiratory droplets during procedures.

They became ubiquitous during the COVID-19 pandemic as basic protection against airborne illness: The pharmacy ran out of surgical masks.

Unlike N95 respirators, they don't form a tight seal against the face.
