supercapacitors

High-power energy buffers

Supercapacitors are energy storage devices that bridge the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries.

They store electrical charge through electrostatic fields rather than chemical reactions, allowing them to charge and discharge much faster than batteries while lasting through millions of cycles.

The tradeoff is lower energy density—they hold less total charge per unit weight.

Supercapacitors excel in applications requiring quick bursts of power: regenerative braking systems, backup power for electronics, and smoothing voltage fluctuations.

Also called ultracapacitors.
