lead-acid batteries
Rechargeable automotive power
Lead-acid batteries are rechargeable batteries that use lead plates and sulfuric acid to store electrical energy.
Invented in the mid-nineteenth century, they remain the standard for starting automobile engines and providing backup power.
They're heavy, relatively inexpensive, and reliable, though they've been supplanted by lithium-ion batteries for portable electronics and increasingly for electric vehicles.
