Sub-prefectures are administrative divisions within a prefecture, representing a lower tier of regional government.
The term appears mainly in countries whose administrative systems derive from French or Japanese models.
In France, sub-prefectures are headed by sub-prefects who represent the national government.
In Japan, they often govern remote island groups or sparsely populated areas: The Ogasawara Islands are administered as a sub-prefecture of Tokyo.
