quartets

Groups of four

Quartets is the plural of quartet, a group of four.

Most often the word describes musical ensembles—a string quartet consists of two violins, a viola, and a cello; a barbershop quartet sings four-part harmony.

By extension, any composition for four performers is a quartet.

The word applies beyond music to any set of four: The quartet of novels took him twenty years to complete.
