musical dialogue
Operatic back-and-forth exchange
Musical dialogue is conversation conducted through music rather than speech, where instruments or voices exchange phrases as if speaking to each other.
In opera and musical theater, it refers to sung exchanges between characters that advance the plot.
The term also describes a compositional technique where melodic lines alternate or respond to one another: The woodwinds and strings engage in musical dialogue throughout the second movement.
