double-clutching

Manual transmission skill

Double-clutching is a driving technique for manual transmissions where you press the clutch twice during a gear change—once to disengage, shift to neutral, release, then press again to engage the new gear.

This matches engine speed to transmission speed, reducing wear on synchros.

The technique was essential for older unsynchronized gearboxes and remains standard in heavy trucks: You can't drive an 18-wheeler without double-clutching.

In casual speech, double-clutching can mean hesitating or second-guessing yourself.
