step pyramids
Layered ancient monuments
Step pyramids are ancient monumental structures built in tiers or levels that decrease in size as they ascend, creating a stepped appearance rather than smooth sides.
The earliest examples are Egyptian, predating the true pyramids at Giza.
Similar structures appear independently in Mesopotamian ziggurats and Mesoamerican temples.
The step pyramid at Saqqara is Egypt's oldest stone monument.
