Maya civilization
Ancient Central American
Maya civilization flourished in Mesoamerica from roughly 2000 BCE through the Spanish conquest, centered in present-day Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.
The Maya developed sophisticated writing, astronomy, mathematics (including the concept of zero), and monumental architecture—pyramids, temples, city-states.
Though often spoken of in the past tense, millions of Maya people and their languages persist today.
