stenos

Shorthand office workers

Stenos is the plural of steno, an informal shortening of stenographer—a person who takes dictation in shorthand—or stenography, the practice itself.

The term evokes mid-twentieth-century office culture, when stenos formed a distinct occupational class, predominantly women, who recorded meetings and correspondence in rapid notation.

The executive called in one of the stenos to take notes during the board meeting.
