machine shorthand
Typed rapid transcription
Machine shorthand is a system of stenography using a specialized keyboard called a stenotype, where combinations of keys pressed simultaneously represent sounds, words, or phrases.
Court reporters and closed captioners use machine shorthand to transcribe speech at speeds exceeding 200 words per minute: The court reporter's fingers flew across the stenotype machine.
The output appears as coded strokes that software translates into readable text.
