double letters
Pairs within words
Double letters are two identical letters appearing consecutively in a word: the double *o* in *book*, the double *s* in *lass*.
In English spelling, double consonants often indicate a short vowel sound in the preceding syllable: *hopping* versus *hoping*.
Some doubled letters are silent: the second *b* in *dumbbell*.
I always forget whether "accommodate" has double c's, double m's, or both.
