pronunciation rules
Sound-making conventions
Pronunciation rules are the patterns governing how letters and letter combinations are sounded in a language.
English has notoriously inconsistent pronunciation rules—compare the "ough" in cough, through, though, and rough.
Children learning to read must internalize these rules, along with their many exceptions.
The term also applies to guidelines for saying words in a foreign language: The pronunciation rules for Spanish are more regular than English.
