sonatina
Scaled-down musical work
A sonatina is a short or simplified sonata, typically lighter in character and less technically demanding.
The form emerged as teaching pieces for young pianists, though composers have written sonatinas of genuine artistic merit: Clementi's sonatinas remain piano lesson staples.
The diminutive suffix signals smaller scale, not lesser quality.
