somas

Biological organism bodies

Somas is the plural of soma, which has several distinct meanings.

In biology, the soma is the cell body of a neuron, as distinct from its branching extensions.

In anatomy, soma refers to the body as opposed to the mind or soul.

Soma is also a muscle relaxant (carisoprodol) prescribed for pain: He's been popping somas since his back went out.

In Aldous Huxley's *Brave New World*, soma is the government-issued drug that keeps citizens docile and content—a reference now used for any substance or distraction that numbs people to reality.
