social disease
Sexually spread illness
Social disease is a dated euphemism for a sexually transmitted infection, particularly syphilis or gonorrhea: He came back from the war with a social disease.
The term reflects an era when such conditions couldn't be named directly in polite conversation.
Less commonly, social disease refers metaphorically to societal problems like poverty or crime.
