autoimmune disease

Body fights itself

An autoimmune disease is a condition in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own healthy cells and tissues.

Normally the immune system distinguishes between foreign invaders and the body's own cells, but in autoimmune disorders this recognition fails.

Examples include rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes.

She was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease after months of unexplained symptoms.
